Jean Paul Gaultier was born in 1952 and showed his first collection in Paris in 1976. He introduced menswear in 1984 and became known for corsetry, skirts for men, tattoo and trompe l'oeil prints, bondage details and the printed mesh tops of the 1990s. Many pieces of the 1980s and 1990s were produced by the Italian manufacturer Gibo, whose name appears on the labels of that period. The ready to wear line closed in 2014 and the house continued with haute couture, where Gaultier retired in 2020.

The AKAIBU archive spans the Jean Paul Gaultier work from Fall Winter 1984 to Fall Winter 2003, with strong groups from Spring Summer 1996, Spring Summer 1999, Spring Summer 2000 and Spring Summer 2001. It includes printed mesh tops and dresses, the Venus de Milo and psychedelic prints, bondage pants and tops, knitwear, pareos, tailoring from the Gibo period, accessories and pieces from Gaultier Homme and Jean Paul Gaultier Classique.

The label names and the manufacturer references of each period help to date Gaultier pieces, and we note the season in each listing when it can be confirmed.
