Product Details

Martin Margiela showed the sundial ring in his Spring Summer 1991 collection, the season presented on a vacant lot in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, and it has stayed one of the house’s most quietly collected objects. The piece is a shepherd’s dial, the pocket instrument European farmers used to read the time from the height of the sun: a heavy brass band engraved with the months around the outside, a narrow sliding ring with a pinhole that is set to the date, and an hour scale cut into the inside of the band where the beam of light lands. Margiela took the tool as it was, patina and all, and hung it on a long black cord so it is worn at the chest rather than on the hand.

Great vintage condition, the brass shows the dark oxidised surface the piece is meant to have.
