Helmut Lang was born in Vienna in 1956 and started his label in the city in 1986 before showing in Paris. His work defined a new minimalism in the 1990s: utilitarian cuts, technical fabrics, denim treated like tailoring, straps and harness details and a mix of luxurious and industrial materials. In 1998 the company moved to New York and showed there ahead of the European calendar. The Prada Group took a stake in 1999 and full control in 2004, and Helmut Lang left his label in January 2005. Pieces from the years before his departure are what collectors mean by Helmut Lang archive.

AKAIBU is based in Vienna, the city where the label started, and Helmut Lang is one of the largest sections of our archive. The collection spans the designer's own years from 1996 to 2004, with strong groups from Fall Winter 1999, Spring Summer 2003, Fall Winter 2003 and Spring Summer 2004. It includes denim and painter jeans, bondage and strap pants, cargo and astro pieces, parkas and coats, leather, tailoring, footwear and accessories.

Labels from this period include the plain black and white Helmut Lang label, Helmut Lang Jeans and the Italian production labels used before and after the move to New York. The season is often marked on the care label, and we note it in each listing when it can be confirmed.

Every piece in this collection is examined and authenticated in house in Vienna before it is listed. We ship worldwide with tracked delivery, and our showroom in Vienna can be visited by appointment.
