Maison Martin Margiela SS02 Artisanal Graffiti GATs

In Spring Summer 2002, Maison Martin Margiela's Artisanal line took the house's German Army Trainer, a silhouette borrowed from a 1970s military sports shoe, and treated each pair as a one of one canvas. Hand drawn graffiti illustrations and lettering cover the panels, applied individually in the atelier so that no two pairs came out alike. The season around them dealt with anonymity in a digital world: its presentation was a short film produced with the British creative agency Intro, in which the models' faces and limbs were edited into translucence.
