Thierry Mugler SS99 Sculptural Collar Layered Silk Gown

A floor-length silk gown from Thierry Mugler's Spring Summer 1999 season. The collar carries the design: the same silk is folded and turned back on itself at the shoulder, building a raised sculptural form where a conventional neckline would sit. Mugler spent the nineties training the eye on structure rather than decoration, cutting garments so that the construction becomes the ornament. Below the shoulder the dress stays plain, a narrow column closed by a placket down the front.
